UNDER THE STARS INFORMATION

Under the Stars | Monday, December 14

Abilene Zoo | 6:30 PM

Is this concert required for choir students?

This concert is a required performance and will count as three assessment grades in the 3rd six weeks. Students that are quarantined during the week before the concert and/or the day of the concert will be given an alternate assignment to complete to earn a grade for the concert. Remote learners will also be given an alternate assignment to fulfill the performance requirement. Students must attend class in person starting on Monday, December 7 through Monday, December 14 in order to perform in the concert.

What do students wear to perform?

Students will wear the event sweatshirt with jeans and closed toed shoes. The sweatshirt is navy with gold and white graphics printed on the front and was provided for all students by our AHS Choir Booster Club. Students are encouraged to add hats, scarves, and gloves with their sweatshirts, as well. Masks are required of all student performers. Please wear your black Abilene ISD Fine Arts mask, or another solid black mask with your performance attire. Coats and jackets will be removed and left in the pre-performance area while each choir performs on stage. AHS Choir Officers will be placed in this pre-performance area to watch these personal items during performances.

I need more than 4 tickets for my family. What should I do?

If the 4 tickets your student receives is not enough for your family, please email Wendy Weeks (wendy.weeks@abileneisd.org) and let her know how many extra tickets you need for your family. We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but will consider them on a “first come, first served” basis. If you do not need all 4 tickets that you receive, we ask that you turn extra tickets back into your director, so that requests for more tickets can be fulfilled. All ticket requests must be received by noon on Friday, December 12.

Where will the choirs perform?

The performance area is adjacent to the Pavilion at the Abilene Zoo. AHS Choir Officers will be positioned along the route from the main entrance to direct concert attendees to the performance area. Please be aware that it is a bit of a walk from the main entrance of the zoo to the performance area. Abilene Zoo staff will be available to transport concert attendees with mobility needs to the performance area by golf carts. Please contact Wendy Weeks (wendy.weeks@abileneisd.org) by noon on Friday, December 12 if you would like to make use of this service on the night of the concert.

What time should I arrive?

The main gates will open at 6:00 PM. Students and concert attendees should plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before their choir’s scheduled performance time. This will allow ample time for concert attendees to walk to the performance area and find a seat. Students should report to Caribbean Cove (adjacent to the Pavilion) 10 minutes prior to their scheduled performance time. Of course, you are welcome to come early in order to enjoy the Abilene Zoo, or perhaps hear other choirs from the standing room area of the performance area.

I am an AHS choir student. Where do I go when I arrive at the Abilene Zoo?

Students will enter through the main gate of the Abilene Zoo. Performers do not need a ticket; the event sweatshirt will be their admittance to the concert. The Caribbean Cove area of the zoo will serve as the pre-performance meeting place. Students will report to Caribbean Cove 10 minutes before their scheduled performance time. Upon arrival in Caribbean Cove, students should check in with the attendance officer for their choir. Jackets, coats, and cell phones will be left in this area while each choir is performing. Choirs will line up in this area and make final preparations before taking the stage for their performances. Following each choir’s performance, students will return to the Caribbean Cove to pick up personal belongings. At this time, students are dismissed to explore the zoo attractions with their friends and family, or to go home.

I am a parent or special guest arriving at the choir concert. Where do I go?

Parents and special guests will come to the main gate of the Abilene Zoo. Although admission is free, a ticket is required for admission into the concert. No exceptions. Each AHS choir student will receive 4 tickets to be distributed to parents and other special guests. All concert attendees must wear a mask for the duration of the event. Tickets will not be available at the gate of the Abilene Zoo.

Entering the performance area for the concert

There will be a 10 minute intermission between performances of each choir. When each choir’s performance is over, we kindly ask that the audience vacate the performance area seats and take the opportunity to explore the many wonderful attractions of the Abilene Zoo. This will allow the parents and special guests of the next choir to perform to have preferential seating for their singer’s performance, while also allowing for social distancing. The performance area is large enough to accommodate seated guests as well as allow for standing room viewing behind the seating area as well. We respectfully ask that all of our concert attendees observe social distancing guidelines while in the performance seating area.

Performance times are as follows:

6:30 PM    Bella Voce (6th period)

6:50 PM    Eagle Chorale (1st period)

7:10 PM    Treble Choir (5th period)

7:30 PM    Pure Gold

7:50 PM    Concert Choir (3rd period)

What do I do after my choir has performed?

After each choir performs, students will exit the stage and return to the pre-performance area (Caribbean Cove). After they collect their personal belongings, students are dismissed to explore the attractions of the Abilene Zoo with their friends and families. If they would like to listen to another choir perform, they are kindly asked to give families and special guests for the next performers an opportunity to sit in the seats provided. Students are welcome to stand around the outside of the performance area to watch other choirs sing. Once a student has performed, they have fulfilled their responsibilities, and are free to go home.
